Identification: Annual; blooms June to October. Grows 3 to 10 ft tall. Stems hollow, upright, easily broken and have a purplish tinge. Leaves opposite or whorled with (usually) three leaves to a node; shape oblong, ovate or elliptic; margins sharply serrate and petioles have small glandular stalks at base. Flowers in groups of 4 to 8 at ends of stalks. Petals are fused into a tube and are showy lavender to white. Seed capsules enlongated and explode upon touch when mature.

Impacts: Policeman's helmet forms dense stands along river systems and moist lowlands, excluding native forbs.

Biological Controls: No approved biological control agent is available.
