ALERT: PLEASE CALL 1-866-INVADER IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE FOUND THIS SPECIES

Identification: Perennial; blooms in midsummer. Grows up to 3 ft tall, roots can reach 20 ft. Leaves narrow up to 4 in long. Flowers borne in an umbel and surrounded by yellowish-green bracts which turn yellow in late May, making them easier to identify.

Impacts: Leafy spurge is one of the West's most important weed species because it reduces cattle carrying capacity of infested rangelands by 50 to 75%. Once established, control of even modest-sized infestations is difficult, and annual treatments are required to contain populations. A grazing prescription which includes sheep grazing prior to other livestock has been sucessful in increasing agricultural productivity in rangelands infested with leafy spurge in parts of the West.

Biological Controls: There are 12 approved biological control agents available, 6 of which have been established in Oregon.
