Identification:
Perennial; blooms June to September. Stems are prostrate, 1 to 4 ft long from an extensive root system that often climbs or forms dense tangled mats. Leaves alternate, arrowhead-shaped with lobes at the base. Flowers bell or trumpet shaped, white to pinkish and 1 inch in diameter. Fruit a small, round capsule, usually four-seeded.
Impacts:
Considered a pest in all 50 states, bindweed is known for is ability to reduce crop yields by 50%. It competes with crops for moisture and nutrients, and is difficult to remove once established. The twining nature of the plant hampers harvesting of crops, especially in orchards and vineyards.
Biological
Controls: Two approved biological control agents are available, but have not been successfully established in Oregon.
